John Connor
Sarah Connor Chronicles & some Rangers too / i am a sucker for action movies. it is one of the completely un-girly things about me. i go gaga over guys like John McClane and Cameron Poe, The Terminator, and Martin Riggs, especially towards the end of the movie when they are at their peak dirt and bloodiness. There is something about it that screams sexy to me. One of my favorite movies to watch is Terminator. Well, Terminator 2, because i like it better than i like the first one (which my boyfriend says is blasphemous) because it has Eddie Furlong in it, and the first time i saw the movie i was a little kid, and seeing a younger person in a movie was something i could relate to. As i just said, i first saw this movie when i was relatively young. My brother, sister, and i used to watch it (along with Fried Green Tomatoes) just about every time we visited one of our Uncles in Kearny, NJ. I love The Terminator, i love the second Terminator, and i love the third Terminator.
So the other night after i picked my beloved daddy up from dialysis and we came home and he put on The Sarah Connor Chronicles, i didnt object, i sat down and watched. I knew that the show had premiered the previous day, but figured i may as well see what was going on. My dad filled me in on the basic plot that i missed, so that i could follow what was happening. Eventually, i watched the first episode online so that i could get a better picture.
Being the snob that i am when it comes to things like remakes and reinterpretations i was still a little wary, even though i had approved of the second episode. I must say, though, that i rather like the series and will definitely either be tuning in, or catching the episodes online once Heroes comes back (because i am a dedicated Heroes fan). Speaking of Heroes, one of the main characters of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles is someone that i definitely recognized from the first season of Heroes. John Connor is played by cutie Thomas Dekker who also played Zach, friend and confidant of ‘miracle grow girl’ Claire. I did love him as Zach but i dont know how i feel about him as John Connor. I might just have to get used to it, cause i am oh so used to the boy version being played by Furlong and therefore have too much of a presumptuous mind.
The part of Sarah Connor, mother and drill sergeant to the future leader of the resistance, is played by Lena Headey. I think she plays the part she was cast well also…but again i’m hung up on the fact that she doesnt doesnt seem like Sarah Connor to me. This time i blame it entirely on Linda Hamilton who is the only Sarah Connor that i have ever known. But Headey does manage to put across the same wonderful mix of hard ass with a heart of gold determined to prepare her son for the trials ahead.
Summer Glau…is simply wonderful. I saw her in Serenity and loved her, and i love her here. there is something about the actress, who plays Cameron Phillips (shock! A Terminator with a name) that makes her a chameleon. She slips right into the roles she is cast, making the viewer believe that she really is constructed out of steel and can break your bones with a glare.
The basis of the new series, so far, is that though Miles Dyson is dead and buried and (when the show starts) it’s been two years since the Cyberdine fiasco, Terminator Assassins come after John again. John and Sarah Connor have been living, for the past six months, with Sarah’s new fiance, who she abruptly leaves. A mean ass Terminator tracking Sarah and John find them and launches an attack. This is where Cameron makes her move and helps them escape. Sarah and John learn what we learned in the third Terminator movie, that even though they thought they averted judgement day in the second movie, they only postponed it. The new date set for the apocolypse is April, 2011. At least they have time, since they are in 99. Jump to 2007, literally.
I dont want to give away too much of the series, because i feel it is definitely worth something checking out. Right now the first two episodes are available to watch at fox.com and it airs on Monday nights at nine. But some other things that arent key to the plot, i would still like to talk about.
I really love how the television show doesnt completely ignore the movie. It doesnt pretend like there wasn’t a whole lot of backstory to go through, and they didnt rewrite the movies either. The characters stayed the same characters, even though they are now played by different actors. In the first episode, they talk a lot about things that happened in the past (aka movies one and two), and they even take a visit to the Dyson household.
The drive of the characters hasnt changed. Sarah Connor still knows that it’s all about the mission, that the person who has to live is John. he is the one that matters. John is still a teenager, and though knows his destiney still gets scared about if he’ll be able to be a huge military hero.
They use recognizable trademark Terminator music! this thrilled me to no end. I smiled like a freak when i heard the familiar music and thought that it was a great touch. I mean, if it’s not broke, dont fix it…ya know. But…they do also have some newer versions of the old stuff, which i liked as well. They only slightly modified it and didnt mess with the integrity of it all. It really did make me smile…because i hear the music play in my head when i see the evil terminator, and to have it coming out of the stereo speakers as well means that i’m not the only one who has the connection.
All in all, i like the show. I’m gonna try and catch it every week (which is something i really have to try at because i watch like, two- now three) television shows. So…go watch it.
in other news. The Rangers beat the Sabres last night, thanks in part to Sabre-turned-Ranger Chris Drury. I am a true blue ranger fan…and was so happy because they really havent been doing that well lately. They had won on saturday night, against the Canadiens…but that was to be expected because i was at that game with jon, and the rangers have yet to lose a game when we are in our season seats. they lost tuesday to the penguins…but winning last night makes me smile. GO RANGERS!!!

By my count (ignoring comic books and other spin-off material), there have been at least three Terminator timelines (though I’m using the term “timeline” loosely, since the general implication in the Terminator universe is that there is, strictly speaking, only one timeline and that it undergoes changes — read my old Metaphilm article about the nerd obsession with continuity issues if you want to see me geeking out about these sorts of issues as they apply to other franchises like Star Wars and Star Trek): The first timeline, seen in the first movie and in the second movie up until the CompuDyne Cyberdyne HQ gets blown up (donâ��t examine the causal logic there too closely, please), was characterized by a causal loop in which the sentient computer program Skynet caused a nuclear war in about 1997 but was itself destroyed circa 2029 by post-apocalyptic rebel leader John Connor, who then sent a man back in time to 1984 who became his own father. At the end of the second film, a new timeline is created (branching off from the point in 1995 [though the film came out in 1991] when CompuDyne Cyberdyne HQ was blown up, two years before it could trigger the nuclear war). In this new timeline, though (as we learn in the third film), the nuclear war still happens eventually (â��Judgment Day iss ineviddubleâ��) — specifically in 2004 (though the film came out in 2003) and more dueling robot assassins are still dispatched to the past from sometime around 2032 (when vengeful robots, operating after the destruction of Skynet, kill the adult John Connor). I think the impending new trilogy of Terminator films, featuring Christian Bale as the adult John Connor, will take place in that second timeline, after the nuclear war of 2004, and depict a kick-ass conflict between early-model Terminators and human resistance fighters. Good! But a third timeline was created Sunday night. Many fans who were bummed out by the nuclear war of 2004 may be pleased about it. A robot played by Summer Glau comes back from 2027 to stop a Terminator dispatched to kill John Connor in 1999 — with the fourteen-or-so year-old John Connor confusingly referring to the prior robot attack (from Terminator 2: Judgment Day) as “two years ago,” but presumably he means that the originally-scheduled date of the nuclear war was 1997, which is fine. (Note: as I recall, there was some confusion evident in the third film about whether T2 had taken place in â��91, when it was actually released, or â��94, when it took place, but Wikipedia gets it right, so let’s assume the producers will from here on out, too.) â�¢â�¢â�¢ What makes the TV series a clear-cut third timeline (and possibly a fourth, with the potential for more to come) is that the Glau-bot does not come from a timeline in which the nukes came in â��97 (as in T1) or even â��04 (as in T3) but in â��11. Furthermore, in perhaps the biggest surprise of the premiere, she yanks John Connor and his mom from â��99 to â��07 at the end of the episode (putting them four years prior to nuclear destruction if they’re in her home timeline but well past the point of destruction if they were in their own original timeline, so clearly they arenâ��t). So how did the nukes get delayed from â��04 to â��11? The most logical conclusion would have to be that Glauâ��s removal of the Connors from the â��99-â��04 period actually saved civilization (for now) by causing the Terminators to call off the attack seen in T3, which had led directly to the “rise of the machines,” thanks to the code-speaking Terminator played by the lovely, athletic, and rumored-to-be-bisexual Kristanna Loken (she is said to have slept with her BloodRayne co-star Michelle Rodriguez and is seen in the photo montage atop another of my Metaphilm articles — I just mean you can see Loken, not that you can see them sleeping together, which would make Metaphilm a far, far more popular site). Of course, as Iâ��ve noted before, this all quickly gets absurd if the time travelers of 2032 have potentially unlimited power to keep going back and changing things — Terminator quickly becomes Groundhog Day, or at least becomes that bit from Family Guy where Peter keeps going back in time and screwing up his first date with Lois. But let’s assume there are limits to how many time-missions they can launch and what they can try to change, just to keep things remotely plausible and dramatic. â�¢â�¢â�¢ So: whatever happens next in the series, it would appear we will now have two rival Terminator timelines at work (besides the one in the original film), one on the small screen and one (next year, if all goes as planned) on the big screen, with the big screen world presumably being the T3 timeline in which the nuclear war already happened back in 2004 (which is not much weirder than Star Trek’s Eugenics Wars supposedly taking place in the 1990s, when Khan conquered a third of the Earth without you noticing, I suppose). Which timeline will prove more popular, I wonder: Summer Glauâ��s or Christian Baleâ��s? (And on a related note, who would win a fight between River and Batman?) Charles Bronson: A Look Back / I found this article while looking around online and I felt that it completely captures the appeal of Charles Bronson and his legacy. In the world of Tough Guys, Bronson is sometimes eclipsed by stars like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen or even some of the later ones like Steven Seagal or Sylvester Stallone. Experiencing Nashville: Part One - Sunnyside / Sunnyside
For the past 5 years, I have lived within walking distance to a place called Sunnyside. It is pre-civil war antebellum home that stands right in the middle of what is now known as Sevier Park. I will occasionally park my car in the small lot right by the house and have a quick lunch. I really had no idea that the house was so old, and held such historical importance. Sunnyside was located directly between the Union and Confederate lines prior to the Battle of Nashville on Dec. 15, 1864. Afterwards it served as a hospital for wounded soldiers.
The home of Mrs. Jesse Benton, widow of Jesse Benton who left Nashville after a feud with Andrew Jackson. Built in the 1840s, restored in the 1920s by Col. Granville Sevier. Two log cabins east of the house, reputed to have been built by the French for trade with the Chickasaw and Choctaw Indians, may be the oldest structures in Metropolitan Nashville.
Metro Parks Department bought Sunnyside in 1945 from the estate of Col. Granville Sevier.
Note: Deedbook research indicates that the house was built in the 1850s. Documentary and archaeological evidence supports a 19th century date for the construction of the log cabins.
The offices of the Metropolitan Historical Commission and Metropolitan Historic Zoning Commission are located at Sunnyside in Sevier Park, 3000 Granny White Pike.
Sunnyside was built in about 1852 by Mary Childress Benton. Its site is part of Nashville�s early settlement history. On July 10, 1788, the state of North Carolina granted Thomas Hardiman 640 acres, equivalent to one square mile, along Brown�s Creek for his service in the Revolutionary War. The property changed hands several times before Mary Benton purchased about 38 acres of it in January 1852. By this time, a house of cedar logs existed on the present home site. Mary Benton was the widow of Jesse Benton and the first cousin of Sarah Childress Polk, wife of President James Polk. Jesse, along with his brother, Thomas Hart Benton, is remembered for engaging in a famous pistol fight with Andrew Jackson in 1813. The ongoing quarrel with Jackson caused both brothers to leave Nashville. Thomas Hart Benton moved to Missouri, becoming a well-known public figure and U.S. Senator. Jesse left Nashville to live and own property in both Texas and Louisiana, refusing to �live longer among people who gave such political preference to a man like Andrew Jackson.� Jesse died in 1843.
During construction of the house, Mary lived in the log house and found it so comfortable that she incorporated it into an ell behind the main house, which is a traditional frame building with two rooms downstairs and two upstairs on either side of a central hall. This form is known as an I-house. Sunnyside�s vernacular interpretation of popular antebellum architectural styles combines decorative brackets, usually an Italianate feature, with the central porch, two-story columns, and symmetry of Greek Revival.
Mary brought her widowed niece, Minerva Douglass, and her niece�s two children, Henry and Mary, to live in the completed house. Young Mary Douglass gave Sunnyside its name, reflecting its bright, open hillside location. Mary Douglass later married Theodore Francis (Frank) Sevier of Kentucky, and the young couple lived at Sunnyside until the Civil War, when Frank enlisted in the Confederate Army.
John Shute bought the property during the Civil War for his daughter, Mrs. Stephen Childress, whose husband was a relative of Mary Benton. The couple changed the name of the house to Lee Monte to honor Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The Battle of Nashville raged around the house on December 15 and 16, 1864. The property stood between Confederate and Union lines and still bears reminders of the fighting in scars left by minie balls on the porch door and columns. Wounded Union soldiers were treated here in the days following the battle. The Childress family returned after the war and enlarged the farm to 140 acres before selling it in 1875.
In 1882, Dr. L.G. Noel purchased the estate at auction. Noel owned the property longer than any other individual and renamed it Idlewild for his mother�s home in Memphis. Dr. Noel was a prominent Nashville dentist and also taught dentistry classes at Vanderbilt, where he served as chair of dental pathology from 1905 until the dental school closed in 1926. During this period, the property slowly changed from a country estate to a suburban one as modern conveniences like telephones and indoor plumbing were added. A few chickens, horses, and a dairy cow remained, but farming gave way to suburbanization as the Noel family subdivided part of the land.
After Dr. Noel�s death, Granville Sevier, son of Frank and Mary Douglass Sevier, came back to visit the house where his mother had grown up. In 1927, he purchased 20 1/2 acres from the Noel family and brought his mother back to the home she had christened Sunnyside. Sevier renovated the house, adding the one-story brick wings, enlarging the basement, and building the stone office. His heirs sold the property to the city of Nashville after his death in 1945.
Sevier Park opened on this property in 1948. In 1954, a swimming pool was added to the park, and the community center was built in 1963. By 1985, the park had picnic shelters, a ball diamond, tennis courts, a playground, and a basketball court. Sunnyside was occupied by the family of a Parks Department superintendent until 1987. Later, the building housed various community groups. A major restoration was completed in 2004, and Sunnyside is now home to the Metropolitan Historical Commission and Metropolitan Historic Zoning Commission.

Sunnyside in Sevier Park is located in the Belmont-Hillsboro and 12th South neighborhoods, where 12th Avenue South becomes Granny White Pike. From downtown, take 12th Avenue South south (away from downtown). Sevier Park is located about two and a half miles from downtown. Turn left on Kirkwood and the driveway is on the right. Sunnyside is the yellow Greek Revival house in the middle of the park.
Sunnyside is owned by Metro-Nashville Government and is located in Sevier Park on 12th Avenue South (Granny White Pike) just north of I-440 (no exit off I-440). The grounds are open to the public but the house itself is not.

Charles Banks Wilson: An Oklahoma Life in Art / Charles Banks Wilson is one of Oklahoma’s premier artists whose artworks have been collected and exhibited around the globe. Gilcrease Museum holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Wilson’s work ranging from his early years as an art student and illustrator to his extensive series of Native American portraits and scenes of Oklahoma life. Working in a variety of mediums, Wilson’s talent prompted Thomas Hart Benton to declare him “America’s finest artist historian.” Wilson is an accomplished illustrator, muralist, lithographer, sculptor, and teacher. His work has been widely acclaimed for its attention to detail and insightful composition. The exhibition Charles Banks Wilson: An Oklahoma Life in Art will not only showcase the museum’s holdings but will also include a number of artworks from private collections and several new paintings that have never been on public view. “Painting is a form of poetry made to be seen,” says Wilson. “A painting should not only appeal but should also mean.” The meanings that Wilson finds in his subjects have come from a lifetime of study and effort. Born in Arkansas, the artist spent his formative years in Miami, Oklahoma, a place that would shape his view of the world around him. Wilson’s career as an artist began in the 1930’s after training at the Chicago Art Institute. After a stint in New York in the 1940s working as a book illustrator, he returned to his Oklahoma roots in Miami to begin his life’s work. Over the next sixty years Wilson would build a body of work that places him among the important artists of our time. Art 101: Final Exam-Museum Paper / Art 101: Museum Paper � Final ExamArt is referred to as a diverse range of human activities and artifacts, created by an artist, which may cover a variety of forms. (www.wikipedia.org) The form that will be covered in this paper will focus on visual art. Visual art focuses on colors, styles, design elements, the mood of the piece, amongst an inclusion of other visual and historical elements. For my final exam, I will be comparing and contrasting works of art composed by two artists of different cultures and time periods. The first painting, entitled �The Ballard of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley� was created by an American artist by the name of Thomas Hart Benton in 1934. This was a period of Modern Art, which is a genre of art that strayed away from the traditional styles of painting, and started in the late 19th century. A period, which takes place over at least 100 years, is described as a phase in the development of the work of an artist, group of artists or art movement. (period & movement ppt) The second painting, entitled �Self Portrait�, was composed by a Dutch artist by the name of Judith Leyster. This piece was composed in 1630, during the Baroque Period - a period during the early 17th and 18th centuries, also known as the "Age of the Kings", due to the significance of various kings residing in many different countries during this time. (pg.421) Oil is the medium chosen by Judith Leyster to compose her �Self Portrait�. Although there is no medium listed for Thomas Hart Benton�s painting, we can still compare and contrast many other characteristics of the chosen artworks. Let�s start with the comparisons. As humans, no matter what century we were born- the cultures in which we were raised- the way our bodies are shaped- or our ethnicity, we are all just that � HUMAN. Both Leyster and Benton�s artworks represent the theme known as The Human Experience. The Human Experience simply means that some artists display their personal, cultural, or societal experiences through their paintings. (pg.70) Judith Leyster came from a Dutch culture, whose main focus was to display what home, family, business, social organizations and community meant to them.(pg.429) Artists of the Baroque period, such as Leyster, learned to create works of art by lighting their figures, (shapes we detach and focus on) dramatically and plunging the backgrounds into shadow. The background is the surrounding visual information the figure stands out from (pg.89) In �Self Portrait�, Leyster implements an asymmetrical style, a style that implies unevenly distributed weight, which was done to direct our attention towards the woman in the forefront of the painting and casting the violin player into the background. This technique appears to show the viewers that this woman possesses talents aside from being a painter, but an artist of various forms. The light that is used to highlight the main subject appears to come from the direction in which the figure in the foreground has directed her attention to (the front left). It appears as if there may be a large window of light before the figure which is meant to shine on both subjects, however giving precedence to the subject in the foreground. In comparison to the humanistic style of painting that is implemented in Leyster�s painting, Benton�s expressionistic style of painting displays the turbulent relationships that people of his American culture, during the 1930�s, were experiencing. This interpretation is supported by further research and exploration into the life and times of Benton. Benton is known by his expressionistic style of painting. Expressionism arose when artists came to believe that the fundamental purpose of art was to express their intense feelings towards the world, which is evident in "The Ballard of the Jealous Lover in Lone Green Valley". (pg. 520) Expressionists used bold, vibrant, rich colors to attract attention and depict a dramatic scene.The use of color that artists use in their paintings can create a subject of contrast. Benton and Leyster use very choices of color to create the scenes in their pieces. Benton�s painting incorporates bold primary colors of red and blue, which are colors that cannot be made by mixing colors from the color wheel. As stated earlier, the use of these colors are used to attract our attention, and when combined with other principles of design such as patterns and lines, they create a very dramatic scene which can be pleasing to some and may cause a distraction to others. Although both artists use tertiary colors to obtain a softer appearance, Benton�s use of the colors are applied much thicker than Leyster�s. His colors appear to give a sense of warmth, which is supported by the use of white in the background, to create a sun. Leyster uses hues of grey and tan to create a background which appears soft in texture and uses value which gives the appearance of a shadow. The design element that Leyster�s background contains is unity. The colors are very well blended and appear to have been applied with very short, circular brush strokes which gives a sense of oneness. On the contrary, Benton�s background shows lots of variety in the sense that he has incorporated various, contrasting colors.Artists employ other techniques to their paintings to display movement and how they can detach objects in their compositions without painting two separate pictures. Benton has created a scene which uses a hierarchical scale to highlight the focus of this painting, which is the couple that appears to be having a conflict, while also displaying their love and affection for one another. This is supported by the title of the composition, which uses the word �Lover�. The couple has been placed on higher ground to show their importance over the other figures in the painting. He uses diagonal lines to show movement. A very good example of this is how the bow of the violin player has been drawn to that the instrument is being played. Judith Leyster has also employed diagonal lines to show movement in the same manner. The way she uses diagonal was a very effective way of creating a realistic looking easel which the violin player was painted on. Benton uses hatching lines to create the fences that occupy the farmlands in which these figures lived on. His use of implied lines, which are made by using darker shades between colors of the same tone, to create an illusion of separation, creates hills and uneven land. The result is a background that displays the tumult that surrounded the town. The figures are made 3-dimensional (3D) so that our focus was diverted away from the land and placed on them. Leyster uses the same 3D technique to divert our attention away from the figure on the easel. The woman in the foreground is composed as a 3D object to show the viewers that she is the topic of this painting and the background is what is used to show off her talents. In conclusion, both Judith Leyster and Thomas Hart Benton�s humanistic compositions display each artist�s talent and crafty ability of conveying the messages that were representative of their cultures which they lived amongst. Both were successful at conveying the meanings behind their compositions through painting. These artists� design principles were very similar in the sense of them using representational characteristics, however, their approaches in terms of color technique and styles representative of their periods were very different. Charles Banks Wilson: An Oklahoma Life in Art / Charles Banks Wilson is one of Oklahoma’s premier artists whose artworks have been collected and exhibited around the globe. Gilcrease Museum holds one of the most comprehensive collections of Wilson’s work ranging from his early years as an art student and illustrator to his extensive series of Native American portraits and scenes of Oklahoma life. Working in a variety of mediums, Wilson’s talent prompted Thomas Hart Benton to declare him “America’s finest artist historian.” Wilson is an accomplished illustrator, muralist, lithographer, sculptor, and teacher. His work has been widely acclaimed for its attention to detail and insightful composition. The exhibition Charles Banks Wilson: An Oklahoma Life in Art will not only showcase the museum’s holdings but will also include a number of artworks from private collections and several new paintings that have never been on public view. “Painting is a form of poetry made to be seen,” says Wilson. “A painting should not only appeal but should also mean.” The meanings that Wilson finds in his subjects have come from a lifetime of study and effort. Born in Arkansas, the artist spent his formative years in Miami, Oklahoma, a place that would shape his view of the world around him. Wilson’s career as an artist began in the 1930’s after training at the Chicago Art Institute. After a stint in New York in the 1940s working as a book illustrator, he returned to his Oklahoma roots in Miami to begin his life’s work. Over the next sixty years Wilson would build a body of work that places him among the important artists of our time. He has been compared to George Catlin and Joseph Henry Sharp for the significance of his portraits of American Indians but also to Regionalist artists such as Thomas Hart Benton and John Steuart Curry for his rich but humane renderings of everyday Oklahoma life. “When you look at a work of art, you are sharing an experience in the company of the artist.” Charles Banks Wilson: An Oklahoma Life in Art consists of over 200 of the artist’s finest works, including oils, watercolors, pencil drawings, and lithographs. “Wilson’s accomplishments are simply extraordinary,” says Randy Ramer, collections manager at Gilcrease. “When you consider the scope of his efforts, it’s hard to find anyone to seriously compare him with. Art 101: Final Exam-Museum Paper / Art 101: Museum Paper � Final ExamArt is referred to as a diverse range of human activities and artifacts, created by an artist, which may cover a variety of forms. (www.wikipedia.org) The form that will be covered in this paper will focus on visual art. Visual art focuses on colors, styles, design elements, the mood of the piece, amongst an inclusion of other visual and historical elements. For my final exam, I will be comparing and contrasting works of art composed by two artists of different cultures and time periods. The first painting, entitled �The Ballard of the Jealous Lover of Lone Green Valley� was created by an American artist by the name of Thomas Hart Benton in 1934. This was a period of Modern Art, which is a genre of art that strayed away from the traditional styles of painting, and started in the late 19th century. A period, which takes place over at least 100 years, is described as a phase in the development of the work of an artist, group of artists or art movement. (period & movement ppt) The second painting, entitled �Self Portrait�, was composed by a Dutch artist by the name of Judith Leyster. This piece was composed in 1630, during the Baroque Period - a period during the early 17th and 18th centuries, also known as the "Age of the Kings", due to the significance of various kings residing in many different countries during this time. (pg.421) Oil is the medium chosen by Judith Leyster to compose her �Self Portrait�. Although there is no medium listed for Thomas Hart Benton�s painting, we can still compare and contrast many other characteristics of the chosen artworks. Let�s start with the comparisons. As humans, no matter what century we were born- the cultures in which we were raised- the way our bodies are shaped- or our ethnicity, we are all just that � HUMAN. Both Leyster and Benton�s artworks represent the theme known as The Human Experience. The Human Experience simply means that some artists display their personal, cultural, or societal experiences through their paintings. (pg.70) Judith Leyster came from a Dutch culture, whose main focus was to display what home, family, business, social organizations and community meant to them.(pg.429) Artists of the Baroque period, such as Leyster, learned to create works of art by lighting their figures, (shapes we detach and focus on) dramatically and plunging the backgrounds into shadow. The background is the surrounding visual information the figure stands out from (pg.89) In �Self Portrait�, Leyster implements an asymmetrical style, a style that implies unevenly distributed weight, which was done to direct our attention towards the woman in the forefront of the painting and casting the violin player into the background. This technique appears to show the viewers that this woman possesses talents aside from being a painter, but an artist of various forms. The light that is used to highlight the main subject appears to come from the direction in which the figure in the foreground has directed her attention to (the front left). It appears as if there may be a large window of light before the figure which is meant to shine on both subjects, however giving precedence to the subject in the foreground. In comparison to the humanistic style of painting that is implemented in Leyster�s painting, Benton�s expressionistic style of painting displays the turbulent relationships that people of his American culture, during the 1930�s, were experiencing. This interpretation is supported by further research and exploration into the life and times of Benton. Benton is known by his expressionistic style of painting. Expressionism arose when artists came to believe that the fundamental purpose of art was to express their intense feelings towards the world, which is evident in "The Ballard of the Jealous Lover in Lone Green Valley". (pg. 520) Expressionists used bold, vibrant, rich colors to attract attention and depict a dramatic scene.The use of color that artists use in their paintings can create a subject of contrast. Benton and Leyster use very choices of color to create the scenes in their pieces. Benton�s painting incorporates bold primary colors of red and blue, which are colors that cannot be made by mixing colors from the color wheel. As stated earlier, the use of these colors are used to attract our attention, and when combined with other principles of design such as patterns and lines, they create a very dramatic scene which can be pleasing to some and may cause a distraction to others. Although both artists use tertiary colors to obtain a softer appearance, Benton�s use of the colors are applied much thicker than Leyster�s. His colors appear to give a sense of warmth, which is supported by the use of white in the background, to create a sun. Leyster uses hues of grey and tan to create a background which appears soft in texture and uses value which gives the appearance of a shadow. The design element that Leyster�s background contains is unity. The colors are very well blended and appear to have been applied with very short, circular brush strokes which gives a sense of oneness. On the contrary, Benton�s background shows lots of variety in the sense that he has incorporated various, contrasting colors.Artists employ other techniques to their paintings to display movement and how they can detach objects in their compositions without painting two separate pictures. Benton has created a scene which uses a hierarchical scale to highlight the focus of this painting, which is the couple that appears to be having a conflict, while also displaying their love and affection for one another. This is supported by the title of the composition, which uses the word �Lover�. The couple has been placed on higher ground to show their importance over the other figures in the painting. He uses diagonal lines to show movement. A very good example of this is how the bow of the violin player has been drawn to that the instrument is being played. Judith Leyster has also employed diagonal lines to show movement in the same manner. The way she uses diagonal was a very effective way of creating a realistic looking easel which the violin player was painted on. Benton uses hatching lines to create the fences that occupy the farmlands in which these figures lived on. His use of implied lines, which are made by using darker shades between colors of the same tone, to create an illusion of separation, creates hills and uneven land. The result is a background that displays the tumult that surrounded the town. The figures are made 3-dimensional (3D) so that our focus was diverted away from the land and placed on them. Leyster uses the same 3D technique to divert our attention away from the figure on the easel. The woman in the foreground is composed as a 3D object to show the viewers that she is the topic of this painting and the background is what is used to show off her talents. In conclusion, both Judith Leyster and Thomas Hart Benton�s humanistic compositions display each artist�s talent and crafty ability of conveying the messages that were representative of their cultures which they lived amongst. Both were successful at conveying the meanings behind their compositions through painting. These artists� design principles were very similar in the sense of them using representational characteristics, however, their approaches in terms of color technique and styles representative of their periods were very different. Gary Ashbrook was discovered naked on his bed, with a condom over his head, alongside three empty cans of nitrous oxide he used to blow up the contraceptive. He was dead. The 31-year-old had been experimenting with the drug, also known as laughing gas, with friends he had met online, said housemate Michael Young, who found his body. Mr Young told the inquest: ‘He had been putting a condom on his head for two to three months. ‘He learned this through some friends of his for sexual gratification.’ Friend Paul Beaton said: ‘I knew he was into the sadomasochism bondage scene. I’m sure this was an accident.’ A post-mortem examination revealed that Mr Ashbrook, who had been HIV positive for seven years, died from asphyxiation. East Sussex coroner Alan Craze, recording a verdict of death by misadventure, warned against the dangers of taking nitrous oxide. He told the hearing at Eastbourne magistrates court: ‘If people use nitrous oxide, in the same way as any other drug, and it is abused, it carries with it considerable dangers.’ Child Molester Chokes on Hot Dog Here’s one that could be called poetic justice! A convicted child molester and kidnapper died in prison after choking on a hot dog, prison officials said. Frederick Fretz, 45, was serving a 20-year sentence at the federal penitentiary in California when he died on Dec. 19. According to a prison spokesman, medics tried to remove the hot dog from Fretz’s throat before taking him to a hospital. Cow’s Head sent to Wife’s Lover I think this guy has seen too many “Godfather” movies! A man who mailed a bloody cow’s head to his wife’s lover has been sentenced to probation and community service. Jason Michael Fife “understands that in a civilized society a person cannot send a severed cow’s head to anybody,” said his defense lawyer, Henry Hilles. Authorities in Lower Pottsgrove, northwest of Philadelphia, arrested Fife and charged him with stalking, terroristic threats, disorderly conduct and harassment after he allegedly sent threatening messages and pictures to the victim between May and September 2006. Police said Fife, 31, got the cow’s head from a butcher’s shop, claiming he wanted the dried skull for decoration. Instead, he mailed the head frozen, so as not to alert parcel carriers to the contents, police said. The box became bloody after sitting on the victim’s doorstep on a warm day. “My client did step over the line here, but one can certainly understand his frustration, given that the victim was carrying on an affair with my client’s wife,” Hilles said. Fife, of Hunker, southeast of Pittsburgh, was sentenced Friday to a program for first-time offenders in which he must complete two years of probation and 50 hours of community service. Members of Archbishop Earl Paulk’s family stood at the pulpit of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Chapel Hill Harvester Church a few Sundays ago and revealed the secret exposed by a recent court-ordered paternity test. He could be in trouble with the law for lying under oath about the affair. The living proof of that lie is 34-year-old D.E. Paulk, who for years was known publicly as Earl Paulk’s nephew. “I am so very sorry for the collateral damage it’s caused our family and the families hurt by the removing of the veil that hid our humanity and our sinfulness,” said D.E. Paulk, who received the mantle of head pastor a year and a half ago. D.E. Paulk said he did not learn the secret of his parentage until the paternity test. “I was disappointed, and I was surprised,” he said. A judge ordered the test at the request of the Cobb County district attorney’s office and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, which are investigating Earl Paulk for possible perjury and false-swearing charges stemming from a lawsuit. The archbishop, his brother and the church are being sued by former church employee Mona Brewer, who says Earl Paulk manipulated her into an affair from 1989 to 2003 by telling her it was her only path to salvation. Earl Paulk admitted to the affair in front of the church last January. In a 2006 deposition stemming from the lawsuit, the archbishop said under oath that the only woman he had ever had sex with outside of his marriage was Brewer. But the paternity test said otherwise. So far no charges have been filed against Earl Paulk. District Attorney Pat Head and GBI spokesman John Bankhead would not comment.

According to Willie Lee, Xavier Lee’s father and perennial mouthpiece, Xavier Lee will not return to FSU for 2008. Jimbo Fisher had been recently discussing a move from quarterback to tight end with Lee. Lee was obviously not in agreement with Jimbo’s grand vision and, instead of racking up unexcused absences this Spring at FSU, will be taking his chances at the NFL Combine after which he will most likely wind up somewhere as be converted to a tight end anyway.
This effectively ends the Xavier Lee vs. Drew Weatherford saga that has been boiling over for the better part of two seasons. Thank. You. Jesus. You are as merciful as you are wise to have finally put a bullet into the head of this cripple fight.
Xavier Lee has no one to blame for his on and off the field problems but Xavier Lee. No one else made him miss those classes, no one put any less time into teaching him how to read defenses than would have been spent on any other quarterback, and no one translated the offensive playbook into Aramaic so he couldn’t learn it (In fact, they simplified it for his benefit). All of that is on Lee. The sooner that the people out there screaming about how “unfairly” he was treated during his tenure at FSU figure this out, the sooner we can move on from this debacle and focus on rebuilding the offense.
Most upsetting about this situation is that it confirms we have all but wasted four years in trying to develop Lee as a quarterback. For whatever reason or reasons, he didn’t pan out and all we have to show for it are insinuations of racism and a lack of parity in every decision made regarding Xavier Lee. Bowden and Fisher have, in many ways, royally screwed the pooch in their handling of this, but they aren’t bigots. Sometimes, things just don’t work out (If your quarterback can’t call the correct plays after three years, it didn’t work out).
So, now the starting job is Drew Weatherford’s to lose. Christian Ponder, who showed flashes of promise during the Virginia Tech game will have his shot at it as will D’Vontrey Richardson, assuming he can get his grades back up this semester. EJ Manuel will also have his say on the matter in due time. I wish Xavier nothing but the best of luck in whatever he winds up doing with himself, but with everything that has gone wrong with this football program over the past few years, this may wind up being our first break in a long time and something that actually works out in our favor.

Ezra Levant - conservative political activist, columnist, lawyer, and former proprietor of the now-defunct Western Standard magazine - is a true man of courage. After printing the now-infamous Muhammad Cartoons in the pages of The Western Standard in 2006 (here’s one of them:), Levant was slapped with a complaint to the Alberta Human Rights Commission by radical Calgary rabble-rouser Syed Soharwady. As is the case with these bastions of censorship and arbitrary justice that exist in every Canadian province (plus the Canada Human Rights Commission at the Federal level), Levant had no opportunity to petition for a dismissal of this nuissance suit that has cost him hundreds of hours in preparation, and thousands of dollars in costs.
Never one to be cowed by fascistic opponents, Levant is doing us all a favour by facing the tribunal head-on, and using this opportunity to expose the Human Rights Commissions as the Kafka-esque slaughterhouses of the concepts of free expression and free speech in Canada, as well as the true agenda of the radical Islamist front groups that sponsor these complaints.

My name is Ezra Levant. Before this government interrogation begins, I will make a statement.
When the Western Standard magazine printed the Danish cartoons of Mohammed two years ago, I was the publisher. It was the proudest moment of my public life. I would do it again today. In fact, I did do it again today. Though the Western Standard, sadly, no longer publishes a print edition, I posted the cartoons this morning on my website, ezralevant.com.

I am here at this government interrogation under protest. It is my position that the government has no legal or moral authority to interrogate me or anyone else for publishing these words and pictures. That is a violation of my ancient and inalienable freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of the press, and in this case, religious freedom and the separation of mosque and state. It is especially perverted that a bureaucracy calling itself the Alberta human rights commission would be the government agency violating my human rights. So I will now call those bureaucrats �the commission� or �the hrc�, since to call the commission a �human rights commission� is to destroy the meaning of those words.
Utilizing elementary logic, he de-legitimizes the very commission he is appearing at, by pointing out that the very existence of the body is a violation of human rights itself! I love it…
In 1948, the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, to which Canada is a party, declared that, quote:”Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers.â��
The 1960 Canadian Bill of Rights guaranteed, quote
� human rights and fundamental freedoms, namely, freedom of religion; freedom of speech; freedom of assembly and association; and freedom of the press.
In 1982, the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms guaranteed, quote:
Everyone has the following fundamental freedoms: a) freedom of conscience and religion; b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
Those were even called �fundamental freedoms� � to give them extra importance.
For a government bureaucrat to call any publisher or anyone else to an interrogation to be quizzed about his political or religious expression is a violation of 800 years of common law, a Universal Declaration of Rights, a Bill of Rights and a Charter of Rights. This commission is applying Saudi values, not Canadian values.
It is also deeply procedurally one-sided and unjust. The complainant � in this case, a radical Muslim imam, who was trained at an officially anti-Semitic university in Saudi Arabia, and who has called for sharia law to govern Canada � doesn�t have to pay a penny; Alberta taxpayers pay for the prosecution of the complaint against me. The victims of the complaints, like the Western Standard, have to pay for their own lawyers from their own pockets. Even if we win, we lose � the process has become the punishment. (At this point, I�d like to thank the magazine�s many donors who have given their own money to help us fight against the Saudi imam and his enablers in the Alberta government.)

I have no faith in this farcical commission. But I do have faith in the justice and good sense of my fellow Albertans and Canadians. I believe that the better they understand this case, the more shocked they will be. I am here under your compulsion to answer the commission�s questions. But it is not I who am on trial: it is the freedom of all Canadians.
