Newbery Award

2008 Newbery Award Winners Announced / 2008 Newbery Award Winner: Good Masters! Sweet Ladies!: Voices from a Medieval Village by Laura Amy SchlitzHonor titles:Elijah of Buxton, Christopher Paul CurtisWednesday Wars, Gary SchmidtFeathers, Jacqueline Woodson

Derobing Children’s Literature Awards / When I was a child, I was obsessed with the Newbery Award. I was a reader, big time, and with so many books to choose from, I saw those gold and silver seals as holy stamps of official worthiness. I imagined the Newbery Committee as a circle of robed ancients in a windowless room, unchallengeable in their wisdom. Since then, I’ve met folks who served on the Newbery Medal Selection Committee. You’d think that with the curtain raised I might be disappointed, but it’s quite the opposite. I’ve been nothing but impressed by their credentials, their zeal for quality children’s books, their realness, and their lack of hooded robes. The truth behind the curtain is much more exciting than the fantasy. (Speaking of which, to get a real look at the Newbery process, read Monica Edinger’s excellent blog, Educating Alice.) I’ve served on some judging committees myself now, including this year’s Cybils Award. And while I do tend to don a hooded robe, lock myself in a dark room, and bathe soberly in a pillar of light while I make my own deliberations, I suspect that I’m in the minority.

Jeff Greene

Nami Ryu Testimonials - Jeff Greene, Karzai Protetive Detail / The principles that I have learned over the years as a student of James have come into play on an almost daily basis. We are here protecting President Karzai, who has many many enemies. I have used my aiki more here than anywhere else I have ever been. I also train with my Bugei Bamboo Katana three times a week. Though a feudal weapon, the principals that I have learned from my study of the sword directly correlate to my M4, sniper system, and obviously empty hand. The most important thing that James has passed on to me is proper mindset. Not only adopting the predatory mindset, but also knowing when and where to fight, as well as being cogniscent of your surroundings in a 360 degree sphere is paramount in a country such as Afghanistan where being an American makes you stand out. I just wanted to thank James Williams openly and to encourage anyone who can to train with or attend one of his seminars. Jeff Greene Karzai Protective Detail Karzai Palace Kabul, Afghanistan

Cabrini Green

Best in Show: Cabrini-Green / I’m so proud of my mom. She just won Best in Show for the quilt pictured above at the Morris Graves Museum/Humboldt Arts Council Member Show. The art there was a pretty incredible cross-section of artists from California’s North Coast, including several phenomenal paintings, photographs and sculptures. You know, “Real Art”. Just in case you’re not aware, a lot of artists and art critics don’t consider quilting an “Art”, instead calling it a craft. And to be sure, there is a great deal of “craft” involved in the creation of an Art Quilt, but no more than is required to create a stunning photograph or painting. So it’s validating to win such an award, especially when going up against more traditional art forms. Congratulations, mom. Here’s her artist statement: Cabrini-Green Public Housing Wikipedia: âCabrini-Green in a public housing project in Chicagoâs North Side. At its height, Cabrini Green was home to 20,000 people, living in mid and high rise apartment buildings. Over the years gang violence and neglect created terrible conditions for the residents and the name âCabrini-Greenâ became symbolic of problems associated with public housing in the United States. Currently 5,000 residents remain in Cabrini-Green.â My son rides past what remains of Cabrini-Green on his way to work in Chicago. Most of the original housing projects have been torn down and are being replaced by newer buildings. This 15-story high rise is one of the last remaining buildings. The structure is scarred with fire damage, there are burned out apartments, and a majority of the windows are boarded up or covered in newspaper. My son was impressed with how much this building reminded him of a quilt. There are one hundred and sixty-five identical rectangular window units; all the same and all very different. Many people still call this home, and to continue the quilt analogy, the residents find warmth and security in this soon to be demolished building. Again, congratulations. And also to my cousin Adam Parker Smith, who I’ve written about before, whose Bold as Love installation was picked up in Fiber Arts. Share This

MARCH AGSINT WHITE SUPREMACISTS IN JENA, LA 1/21 / from REVOLUTION newspaper [http://revcom.us/]: January 21st: Oppose the Lynch Mob Racists! No to Nooses! Free the Jena Six! We Want a Better World! White Supremacists plan to march in Jena on Martin Luther King Day in 2008. On Martin Luther King Day of all days, the one day that is supposed to be about the struggle of Black people, they are coming to march with Nooses! This is a call to people everywhere: On Monday January 21st, get to Jena! OPPOSE THE LYNCH MOB RACISTS! Displaying nooses is a hateful and terrorizing message. These racists want to take us back to the days of lynch mobs murdering Black people in this country. Nooses are INTOLERABLE. Bring a sign, hang a poster, make a banner, get to Jena, SAY NO TO NOOSES! The Jena High students said no to nooses hung at their school when they protested by standing underneath the âwhite only tree.â Then on September 20th, 2007 tens of thousands of people stood up, marching in Jena and around the country. People said âEnough is Enoughâ to the injustice in punishing Black youth who take a stand against racism. The white supremacists call Black youth criminals and thugs, they say, âJail the Jena Six.â Letâs say it loud again in Jena: FREE THE JENA SIX! It is in response to September 20th and what that day achieved that white supremacists are lashing out, with a message that takes us back to the horrors of lynch mobs and segregation. When racism rears its ugly head, it is up to people everywhere, white and Black, people of all nationalities, to take a stand. If you are against injustice and inequality, if you want racism to end…itâs up to you to voice it! If we donât speak up and stand up, this horrific message will go unopposed. If not us who? If not now when? Protest in Jena on January 21st. Join people everywhere in politically opposing white supremacy and drowning out their message of hate with the message that WE WANT A BETTER WORLD. This call is still in progress and we invite organizations, student groups, Jena residents and others to endorse. KKKluckers with NOOSES marching on MLK Day in Jena, unopposed? NO WAY! A white supremacist group that calls itself the âNationalist Movementâ plans to march in Jena on January 21. Theyâre telling people to bring signs calling for jailing the Jena 6, abolishing the Martin Luther King holiday, and âdown with communism.â Theyâre openly encouraging people to DISPLAY NOOSES!! Around the country, when people heard about this, a lot of them said, âitâs time to go back to Jena.â And in Jena, many said, âitâs time for people to come back to Jena.â The January 21st Committee has issued a Call to people of all nationalities to come to Jena on Monday, January 21 to say: Oppose the Lynch Mob Racists! No to Nooses! Free the Jena Six! We Want a Better World! (see Call in article below)) This Call already has a number of prominent and significant signatories including Black and white residents of Jena, some parents of the Jena 6, 60 people from the Cabrini Green housing project in Chicago, Cornel West, Herb Boyd, Cindy Sheehan, and Medea Benjamin. Endorsers are still being gathered. And this is shaping up to be very significant. We encourage people to spread this Call far and wide, sign it, and get others to sign it. The Call puts out an important challenge to people of all nationalities to organize to be in Jena on January 21 to DROWN OUT these KKKluckers, whose message is about actually carrying out terror and murder against Black people. What Time Is It in America? Nooses hung on a âwhites-onlyâ tree at Jena High School put a huge spotlight on the unequal oppressive social relations and institutions that exist today and are brutally enforced. This struck a nerve among Black people all over the country. AND it also struck a nerve among despicable and hateful proponents of white supremacy who are striking back in response to the powerful demonstration in Jena on September 20 in support of the Jena 6. There is a real battle going on in this country over NOOSES and all that they represent. A real struggle over what kind of world we want. After the September 20 rally in Jena, in just the next two months, there were as many as 50 to 60 noose incidents around the country. There were more than 22 noose incidents in October 2007 alone, including: October 4, a noose is hung on a construction site in OâHara Township, PA; October 5, nooses are found hanging from a tree in front of a local high school in Columbia, SC; October 9, a Columbia University professor, a Black woman who teaches about racial justice, finds a noose hanging from her office door; October 22, in Brooklyn, NY, a noose is sent to the Black principal at Carnarsie High School; and October 24, in Shreveport, LA, a noose is found in a doctorsâ break room at the LSU Health Science Center. But the forceful imposition of white supremacy and this explosion of ugly, racist threats against Black people is not simply or even fundamentally a case of âgood ole boysâ going wild. All this is happening at a time when the U.S. Supreme Court, the highest judicial body in the land, has overturned Brown vs. Board of Educationâofficially fortifying segregation and savage inequalities in the schools. This is happening only a couple of hundred miles from New Orleans, where the U.S. government carried out the most horrendous crimes against hundreds of thousands of Black people, abandoning them in the floodwaters of Katrina, treating them like animals, heartlessly evacuating them and then making it all but impossible for them to return and rebuild their homes and lives. White supremacy, lynchings and KKK terror were shaped, encouraged by and served to keep in effect a whole system that could not have existed without first slavery, and then near slavery, and segregation and terror centered in the South. The economic system of SLAVERY was an integral and foundational part of the whole way capitalism developed and grew in the United States. The end of slavery did not end the systemic oppression and super-exploitation of Black people. Millions of Black people were subjected to new forms of exploitation as sharecroppers. And a whole âSouthern cultureâ came out of thisâof KKK cross burnings, lynchings, and Jim Crow laws that required âwhite onlyâ and âBlack onlyâ public schools, drinking fountains, trains, buses, and all kinds of other public places. These unequal and oppressive relations have been and continue to be brutally enforced. And while Black people no longer mainly face widespread lynching and cross burningsâthough the kluckers planning on marching in Jena would like to bring them backâBlack people do face the widespread terror of police brutality and murder. The U.S. system of capitalism has profited off the exploitation and oppression of Black people from Day One. And white supremacy has been and is built into the very foundations of this systemâin the economic relations, social relations, and all the thinking and culture that come from and in turn reinforce these relations of inequality. This is why nothing short of getting rid of this system, of making revolution and building a whole new socialist system based on emancipating all humanity, can lead to actually getting rid of the oppression of Black people and other minority nationalities in this country. Past and Present Reality of Lynch Terror The kluckersâ plan to march in Jena is happening in a whole climate and atmosphere in this country where white supremacy is being given a green light and is running amok. Look at what has happened just since September 20, when tens of thousands came to Jena to say: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! November 14, 2007: In Pasadena, Texas, a white racist named Joe Horn saw two Latino men, who he thought were Black, breaking into his neighborâs house. Horn called 911 to say he was going to shoot them dead. And then he didâgiving them a vigilante death sentence for suspicion of burglary. When a group of about ten Black people marched in the street protesting the killing, hundreds of supporters of Joe Horn surrounded them, carrying American flags, hurling racist slurs, and shouting over and over, âUSA!, USA!â Horn faces no charges. Meanwhile: December 23, 2007: A Black man in Long Island, who confronted what he says was a âwhite lynch mobâ at his house is found guilty of second-degree manslaughter and faces 5 to 15 years in prison. John White says he remembers childhood trips to the Deep South and how KKK mobs chased his grandfather out of Alabama in the 1920s. He says this is what came to mind when the white mob confronted him, smacking their fists and hurling racial epithets. The angry mob had followed John Whiteâs son home, alleging he had made sexual remarks about a white female. White said: âIn my family history, thatâs how the Klan comes. They pull up, they blind you with their lights. They burn your house down. They threaten your family. Thatâs how they come.â January 4, 2008: While broadcasting a PGA tour event, Kelly Tilghman, the Golf Channelâs main play-by-play anchor, was talking about Tiger Woodsâ dominance on the Professional Golf Tour and laughed as she said that his competitors should âlynch Tiger Woods in a back alley.â As usual, Tilghman issued a formal apology, asking forgiveness from viewers who âmay have been offended by my commentsââas if she herself wasnât offended or didnât even have a clue as to why such a remark is so racist! The whole history of nooses, of lynching, runs long and deep in this country. And it is not just a thing of the past. In 1981, Michael Donald was randomly picked out by members of the Alabama Ku Klux Klan who were angry that a Black man on trial had not been found guilty of killing a policeman. They beat him with a tree limb before cutting his throat and hanging him from a tree. And remember what happened to James Byrd? A Black man in Jasper, Texas. A rope tied around his neck, dragged behind a truck by white racists until his head separated from his body. What year was that? Not 1870 or 1920 or even 1950. It was 1998. According to the Tuskegee Institute, 3,437 African-Americans were lynched between 1880 and 1951. This means that for many Black people in this country the NOOSE and LYNCHING are not-so-long-ago family history. Denzel Washington was recently on the Tavis Smiley Show talking about the movie American Gangster and the character he played, drug kingpin Frank Lucas. Washington said that he injected into the story what he thought was one of the most fascinating âturnsâ in Frankâs lifeâthat when he was six years old he witnessed his cousin being murdered because of âreckless eyeballing.â Denzel said: âThey said this 12-year-old, whatever he was, 12, 13-year-old cousin was looking at a white woman. Klan types or whatever, authority figures came to his house, smashed a shotgun in his cousinâs face, and blew his head off in front of him.â The âwhites-onlyâ tree where nooses were hung in Jena symbolized a whole âway of lifeâ in that townâof blatant segregation, discrimination, and inequality for Black people. It echoed decades of American history when KKK night-riders lynched Black people and town sheriffs put white sheets on after sundown. Of âsouthern just-usâ where any white person could get away with the murder of someone Black. Where 14-year-old Emmett Till was murdered for whistling at a white woman by a gang of racist whites who were quickly acquitted by an all-white jury. These nooses reflected todayâs reality of Black youth shot down by the police or locked away in prison for the rest of their lives. Of 21st-century USA âjust-usâ where an all white jury can sentence Mychal Bell (one of the Jena 6) to years in prison for standing up against white supremacyâand the U.S. Justice Department then calling this all âregular, not irregular.â Where residents of Jena can recall how a Black man, not that long ago, was stomped to death by a gang of white guys because he bumped into a white woman. THIS STATUS QUO of white supremacy is what the kluckers want to defend and enforce with their march in Jena. This year the official parade in Jena is scheduled for Sunday, January 20, the day before the official MLK holiday on Monday. For many people nationwide, MLK Day is associated with the struggle against white supremacy and the oppression of Black people, and it is outrageous that these kkkluckers are marching on this day. (For an evaluation of the actual role of Martin Luther King, Jr. see sidebar: âMartin Luther King… And What We Really Need.) The Unity We Need The white supremacists must be politically confronted and opposed and put on the defensive. One resident of Jena said: âIf they [the white racists] do this and nobody says anything, theyâre going to feel like they can do anything they want.â But the message that emerges on that day must be very different: That it is long past time for this to be tolerated. There must be a powerful political response and a heightened understanding throughout society of the kind of unity we need, of people of all nationalities standing up against white supremacy in any form, wherever it rears its head. We should remember that it was a very GOOD thing that the hanging of nooses in Jena was NOT ignored, that people didnât just dismiss it, hoping it would just go away. NO! People all over the country and the world heard about it and in response people felt it had to be widely, boldly, and massively exposed and opposed. People felt compelled to find the ways to make it known that: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH! It was shameful that hardly any white peopleâfrom Jena or anywhere elseâwere at the âFree the Jena 6â protest on September 20. And now it is especially important that white people be out there among those who respond to the call to protest white supremacy on January 21. Those white people in Jena who say theyâre not racists, who are perhaps sorry they didnât come out on September 20, now have a second chance! The kluckers are declaring that white people in Jena will be marching with them. And the system will come down on anyone, Black or white, who goes up against the racist status quo. As one young white woman in Jena said, âIf youâre white and you go to visit your Black friends in their neighborhood, youâre gonna get stopped, because you âdonât belong there.ââ People who step out to join the struggle against white supremacy, Black or white, should be supported and if they face official or unofficial threats, people should have their backs. There is no âbeing neutralâ when white supremacists plan on marching on MLK Day with NOOSES! The question is what message will emerge on January 21 from Jena. That Kluckers with nooses marched unopposed? Or that there was a powerful political response that DROWNED OUT their hateful message? The masses of people of all nationalities have a common interest in opposing white supremacy. But it will take real struggle to forge this unity. And it is important to bring about real concrete and visible manifestations of peopleâs determination to NOT TOLERATE white supremacy in any form.

Cotton

The Long, Enduring Journey of Cotton-Eyed Joe / Cotton-Eyed Joe, Where do you come from, Where do you go? Truthfully nobody knows where Cotton-Eyed Joe came from. The song itself, a feisty, irresistible dance tune, dates from before the Civil War, and was firmly established as a fiddle piece by the mid-1800s. It has been recorded countless times in endless variations by everyone from Doc Watson, the Skillet Lickers and the Red Clay Ramblers to Garth Brooks, Michelle Shocked and, in perhaps its strangest incarnation, as an urban dance number with sampled beats merging with fiddles and banjos in a fascinating (and for some, irritating) cultural collision by the Euro-dance combo Rednex. The lyrics vary considerably, aside from the where do you come from chorus, in the different versions of the song, no doubt due to years and years of square dance callers pulling in whatever floating verses fit their needs at the time. It is, after all, a dance tune, and has prompted dancers to fill the dance floor for well over two hundred years now, an amazing bit of musical survival. The Skillet Lickers - Cotton-Eyed Joe So who is Cotton-Eyed Joe? To be cotton-eyed is to have an abnormal amount of white surrounding the iris of the eye, a medical condition that can be brought about by drinking wood alcohol, which blinds, or the effects of any number of illnesses ranging from syphilis to glaucoma and the viral disease called trachoma. Legend has it that Cotton-Eyed Joe was a pre-Civil War slave musician whose tragic life turned his hair white and was famous for playing a fiddle made from the coffin of his diseased son. In the song, Cotton-Eyed Joe is obviously a rambler, coming into town and leaving under mysterious circumstances. Michelle Shocked suggests that he was actually a roving abortion doctor in her version of the song from Arkansas Traveler, which tips things into some pretty heavy territory. Others have pointed out that Cotton-Eyed Joe isnt a person at all but the name of a specific non-partner spoke-line dance and that one doesnt meet Cotton-Eyed Joe, one does the Cotton-Eyed Joe. Whatever its origins, Cotton-Eyed Joe has had an incredible run as a popular song, and in the Rednex version, which contemporary DJs have been quick to add to their standard set lists, it is played constantly at sporting events and makes an appearance nightly at countless clubs, discos, square dances and wedding receptions. It really is an amazing feat and this simple, bubbling melody is now into its third century of filling up the dance floors. Cotton-Eyed Joe, Where do you come from, Where do you go? Nobody really knows the answers to that. It has been a long journey and it isnt close to being over, and even as you read this post, someone somewhere is stepping out on the dance floor to Cotton-Eyed Joe. Not bad for a little fiddle tune. Chair Covers

Patio Chair Covers / By Alison Cole Chairs, whether wood, wrought iron, wicker or plastic, enhance the patio but in the long run prove costly due to maintenance. Patio Chair Covers should be selected on the basis of durability, fitness and quality. Another important factor is that fabric should stay cool and resist moisture, to save chair and cover from mold and mildew. Imagine the embarrassment of a wet dress or pants once you get up from a chair left out at night. Patio Chair Covers are generally used for chairs left in the open. Still, the covers need not be dull, but can be colorfully designed ones. Use fabric paints, sponge brushes or paint pens to create unique motifs to coordinate with the dcor of the patio. Stitch the covers yourself or use premade ones whatever size and shape of chair for that extra vibrancy. For fitted covers, Velcro fastening systems could be used to protect them from getting blown away. The Patio Chair Cover fabrics decide the design and usage. The Chair Covers could cover the entire chair or just the cushion and headrest. If patio chairs are left in the open, then mesh fabric that does not hold water is the ideal choice. The disadvantage of this fabric is that one has to be satisfied with dull, practical gray. For a brighter, softer and richer look, select vinyl fabric, adding the touch of luxury to the patio. Available in different colors such as green, blue, navy or orange, in heavy-duty vinyl or the nylon used to make tents. Another fabric for Patio Chair Covers is Gore-Tex, available by the yard, but it is expensive and the seams have to be sealed to make it totally waterproof. If chairs are left under a covered patio then fabric could be cotton, nets or just throws. The idea is to protect patio chairs so that one need not purchase a new set every season. Patio Covers provides detailed information about patio covers, how to build a patio cover, lattice patio covers, patio chair covers and more. Patio Covers is the sister site of Stone Garden Bench. Regards Stuart Bonell With the nature of the internet today, the risk of false claims has only increased. Because MLM Associates can use blogs, online forums, personal web pages, social bookmarking, and so many other tools, to spread their marketing messages, there are endless risks for MLMs. As an answer to this problem, we have developed a brand protection platform that not only polices the web for false or defamatory claims but it documents online conversations about your brand. Together these two functions make it possible to stay ahead of the game. Because MLMs have so much to lose, we work hard to protect them, and their employees and distributors. Symposium

The Rare Neuroimmunologic Disorders Symposium / July 16 to 19, 2008 in Seattle, Washington We are coming back to Seattle! Our last symposium in Seattle was held in 1999. We made history in 1999. Dr. Douglas Kerr made his first appearance at our meetings and announced his specialization in TM and the establishment of the TM Center at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Brian Weinshenker made his first public presentation of the results from his ground breaking plasma exchange research. It was the first large gathering of the TMA membership. The Transverse Myelitis Association and the Johns Hopkins Project RESTORE (the TM and MS Centers) are co-sponsoring the 2008 Rare Neuroimmunologic Disorders Symposium. The symposium is for people who have TM, MS, ADEM, NMO and ON, their family members and the medical professionals who provide clinical care to people with these disorders. Help us make history again! Please mark the dates on your calendar. If you live west of the Mississippi River, you are not going to want to miss this opportunity. If you live east of the Mississippi River, Seattle is absolutely lovely in the summer time. You owe it to yourself and your loved one to make this trip out west. The symposium will be held at the Redmond Marriott Town Center. You can begin making your reservations at the hotel today! To receive our special rate, please ask for the Rare Disorders Symposium rate when you call (approximately $170 without taxes). You can make your reservation by calling the hotel at (425)498-4000 or reservations at (800)218-7141. We cannot guarantee you either a room in the Marriott or the group rate, if you make your reservations after June 1, 2008. The program will begin on Wednesday evening, July 16th and will be completed with the dinner banquet on Saturday evening, July 19th. There will be a separate registration fee which will be announced shortly. This fee covers the cost of the education program, breakfast and lunch on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, and a Saturday dinner banquet. The per person registration fee for our 2006 symposium was $250; we will do our best to keep the registration fee under $300. We will also distribute the program agenda as soon as it is completed. If you would like to get some idea about the quality of our programs, please visit www.myelitis.org, click on the symposia information link and review the 2004 and 2006 program agendas. Registration materials will be mailed to our members in the United States and Canada. We will ask our international members to use the registration information and process on our web site. If you are confused about whether you should come to Seattle, here are the top ten reasons for attending this incredible event. One. The 2008 Seattle Symposium will be the largest gathering of people with the rare neuroimmunologic disorders; we anticipate that between 200 to 300 people with TM, MS, NMO, ADEM and ON and their family members will attend. If you have never met another person with your condition, this will be a life-changing experience for you. If you have been to support group meetings or other symposia, it will be an opportunity for you to foster the relationships you have established in the past. If you are a participant in the Transverse Myelitis Internet Club, you will likely meet some of the people that you have been corresponding with for the past decade. No one understands your experience in the same way as the other people who will be attending the symposium. Lifelong friendships are made at our symposia! Two. You will become a better advocate for your medical care. There is no other medical education program in the world focused on TM, MS, NMO, ADEM and ON that provides the breadth and depth of information you will receive during the meetings. You will come away from the meetings with a clear understanding of your disorder. As most family physicians and pediatricians (and many neurologists) know very little about these disorders, you need to be informed about the effective treatments for all of the symptoms of TM, MS, NMO, ADEM and ON. The more you know, the more you can help your physician understand about what strategies are possible to manage your symptoms. You will learn about the treatment strategies for all of the symptoms of these disorders. You will also receive information about emotional support, the role of family in the care process, and other social issues that surround people and their families in coping with long-term illnesses and disability. If you have received one of these diagnoses in the past few years and have never attended one of our educational meetings, you cannot afford to miss this opportunity to educate yourself about your condition. Three. The Symposium provides exceptional support and information for care givers. You will meet other caregivers such as yourself. Being able to share in your experiences with other caregivers will offer you tremendous emotional support. Many of the connections you make during the symposium will result in lifelong support networks and friendships. You will be provided with information during the presentations that will significantly enhance your own quality of life. You will learn about the importance of taking care of yourself and how your personal well being is critical to the long-term health of your loved one. Four. All of the physicians from the Johns Hopkins Transverse Myelitis Center and Project RESTORE will be attending the entire symposium and will be making multiple presentations. Many of the physicians from across the country who specialize in these disorders will be attending and presenting at the symposium. Most of the members of the TMA Medical Advisory Board will attend the symposium. You will have the opportunity to meet and talk to all of these physicians at meals, breaks and social events during the weekend. Five. You will have the opportunity to ask your questions of the worlds experts on your condition. There will be informal opportunities for you to approach all of the physicians during the meals and social events. Most of the physicians also offer the opportunity to ask questions at the conclusion of their presentations. Finally, our symposia conclude with a Question and Answer and Discussion Session. At the Seattle Symposium, this session will take place on Saturday afternoon. You will be given a few hours to ask your own questions and to learn from the responses that are provided to other peoples questions. These sessions are so incredibly informative for our members. Six. Presentations will be made on the latest research for acute therapies, symptom management and restorative therapies. The brilliant scientists in our community are performing the most incredible research about these disorders and about ways to repair the nervous system. You do not want to miss these presentations. If you are seeking reasons to hope for the future, the information you will be provided about research will most certainly give you the most compelling reasons for this hope! Seven. Many of the support group leaders attend the symposia from across the country and from around the world. Attending the symposium will provide many of you the opportunity to make connections with the people who are leading these efforts in your state and country. Attending the symposia often gives people the motivation to initiate their own support groups or to lend their support to existing groups. The energy and enthusiasm to get involved in this incredible effort to improve the quality of life for people in our community is contagious. Eight. You will be invited to a banquet that will be held on Saturday evening; this is the last event of the symposium weekend. This dinner is a true celebration of our community. What has happened to you or your loved one has likely been the most difficult and devastating experience in your lives. You have also likely experienced the love, courage, caring, devotion, persistence, fortitude and will that so many people in our community display in their lives after getting one of these disorders. It is also likely that the suggestion that one could celebrate anything remotely connected to getting one of these disorders would not be possible. But come and see and feel and experience for yourself. We are a special community composed of remarkable people. This banquet provides us an opportunity to celebrate US. Sharing this event will be an empowering, energizing, emotional experience. Nine. You will have the opportunity to meet Allen Rucker, author of The Best Seat in the House: How I Woke Up One Tuesday And Was Paralyzed For Life. And you will have the opportunity to meet Jim Lubin and to thank him for his incredible 14 years of service to the TMA Community. Debbie, Paula, Pauline and Sandy will be there, as well. Ten. Your registration fee and travel expenses are deductible as medical expenses on your federal income taxes. Please check with your tax accountant or read the really scintillating Publication 502 for the details and the applicability of this deduction in your specific case. See you in Seattle! From the Transverse Myelitis Association

The Alice Manicur Symposium / I'm in Clearwater, Florida, this weekend to speak to participants in the 2008 Alice Manicur Symposium for Women Aspiring to be Senior Student Affairs Officers.  That's a long title, but the importance of the event deserves it.  The 60 women here have been selected by their campuses as individuals with proven track records, talent and creativity.  They are quite rightly learning more about senior leadership in higher education BEFORE plunging in.  I've been asked to tell them what a president wants from a vice president of student affairs.  I probably should have brought our VP for Student Affairs, Joe Paul, with me and presented him to the group.  He is one of the best in the business.  The symposium was named for Alice Manicur, the daughter of an Italian immigrant and coal miner from West Virginia.  Manicur opened doors to the profession for many women.  In 1982, she was the recipient of the Fred Turner Award for outstanding service to the profession.

Diego Hartfield

Aussie Open Previews / I have always been a fan of Rebound Ace. In my mind, the surface seemed to offer more classic, hard-fought battles than any other Grand Slam, year in, year out. But, it was also a unique playing ground, a kind only to be found in Australia, which not in the least bit added to the charm of the Open. Now, with the replacement of the courts by a US-made plexicushion surface, the event lost a bit of its identity along with it. The uniqueness of each Grand Slam with its own surface has vanished. Hard courts now rule the majors, like they have ruled the pro tours for years already. But the question were all asking ourselves is, will the tours rulers stand tall over the next two weeks? Its time for the draw analysis.MENS PREVIEWFirst QuarterIf youre wondering if a lack of match practice could hurt Roger Federers chances in this tournament, just think back to Wimbledon last year, when there was such a big fuss going about when Fed decided to skip his yearly warm-up event in Halle and head straight from the Parisian clay to his sacred ground in London. A similar road lies ahead.Federer will start his 2008 season against Argentine Diego Hartfield. Hell face a tricky opponent in the second round in either Fabrice the Magician Santoro, or the tower of power, John Isner. Theyre no serious threats though. That could come in the quarters, where a rematch with last years finalist Fernando Gonzalez looms. The Chilean was of course the last player to beat Fed, during the Masters Cup. Thats two reasons to look forward to that one. Still, Federers loss to Gonzalez in Shanghai was probably just a one-off.Semifinalist: Roger FedererSecond QuarterHere we have the fun quarter of the draw. Novak Djokovic is the player to beat as the No. 3 seed, but his path to the semis is hardly a gimme. Djokovic section offers the Dazzling Davids (Ferrer & Nalbandian), Marcos Baghdatis, Lleyton Hewitt, Sydney champ Dmitry Tursunov, Juan Carlos Ferrero and the streaky Marat Safin, Radek Stepanek and Xavier Malisse. And theres US Open breakthrough performer Ernests Gulbis as well. If Nalbandian is ready to play, he and Ferrer will be the two biggest threats to Djokovic out of that bunch. Luckily for the Serb, hell just get to face one of them in the fourth round.Semifinalist: Novak Djokovic Third QuarterHow fit is Andy Murray? Judging from his gasping in the Doha final against Stan Wawrinka, theres still work to be done. I think Murray will outsmart Richard Gasquet over the long haul in the fourth round, and he seems to be a few levels above Davydenko mentally, to beat the Russian in the quarters. Should he face Youzhny for a spot in the semis, the Scot will be in bigger trouble.Semifinalist: Andy MurrayFourth QuarterRafael Nadal has definitely not been playing well after losing to Federer in the Wimbledon final, his confidence being further hammered by a crushing 6-0 6-1 loss to Youzhny last week in Chennai. However, the draw has been kind to Rafa, who really shouldnt be troubled before the quarters. There, hell most likely face Andy Roddick, who for once hasnt been drawn in Federers half. Its true that Roddick can blow Nadal off the court with his serves, but if the Spaniard gets the ball back in play, his game matches up perfectly with A-Rods. Roddick doesnt hit his groundies as flat, or with as much pace as a Youzhny, Berdych, or Blake, players who cause Nadal a lot of trouble. Roddicks only option is to take the balls early and move into the net. He wont hit winners off the baseline consistently. Then again, by coming forward, he gives Nadal a target at the net, and one cant argue with Rafas skill in hitting passing shots. So, even though Nadal may be slumping, hell be favored to reach the last four.Semifinalist: Rafael NadalClosing stagesDjokovic came close to beating Federer in the US Open final, even though it went 0-3. He wont be straight-setted by the Swiss here, but winning more than two sets will still be too much for Nole.In the other semi, I dont believe Murray will have enough gas left in the tank to outplay Nadal in a best-of-five match under gruelling conditions. Rafa may have to come from behind here, but hell prevail. In the final though, his recent lack of confidence should show against Federer, and well be able to add major number 13 to the Swiss résumé.Champion: Roger FedererWOMENS PREVIEWFirst QuarterWas anyone still surprised when the draw came out? Justine Henin again faces competition from Jelena Jankovic and Serena Williams in her half/ This time though, the Belgian is not scheduled to face either one of them until the semifinals. There are some tough hurdles to clear first though for Henin, starting with Tatiana Golovin in the fourth round. Henin encountered the Frenchwoman in two indoor finals near the end of 2007, losing one set in Stuttgart. Henin was a little shaky in Sydney last week, losing sets to Ivanovic and Kuznetsova. Against Kuzy in the final, she was down 0-3 and faced break point to go down a double break. Henin was struggling with her serve, hitting about 20 double faults combined in her last two matches. In the quarters, shell face a major bump in the road in Maria Sharapova. The Russian came very close to upsetting Henin in the appraised final of the Madrid Championships last season, and that was without any match practice under her belt, and not much more training either. Sharapova seems to have left her shoulder problems behind her and that means shell be a legitimate contender again at any Slam other than the French.Semifinalist: Maria Sharapova Second QuarterSerena Williams beat Jelena Jankovic en route to the championship last year, and theyre scheduled for a rematch in the quarters. Jankovic has been fading ever since Wimbledon, though she almost beat Venus Williams to reach the US Open semis, and is yet the only player to have beaten Lindsay Davenport after her comeback. Jankovic will be favored to reach the quarters, but in this section of the draw, Serena has the edge.Semifinalist: Serena Williams Third QuarterIt will take at least one major upset to prevent a quarterfinal showdown between Venus Williams and Ana Ivanovic. Venus has to fend off either Marion Bartoli or the resurgent Na Li in the fourth round, while Ivanovic toughest opponent looks to be the struggling Dinara Safina. Ivanovic is very likely a future Slam champion, but she still has to grow up some more mentally to beat the elite players.Semifinalist: Venus Williams Fourth QuarterSvetlana Kuznetsova and Anna Chakvetadze are the highest seeds in the bottom quarter of the draw, but it probably wont come down to another semifinal clash between the two Russians, like at the US Open. Im not sure anyone would mind about that.We all know about the tragic incident involving Chakvetadze over the off-season, when she wasnt going through the best times of her tennis career either. Yes, she reached the semis at the Championships in Madrid, but after her complete meltdown to Kuznetsova in New York, Chakvetadzes results went downhill. Although Anna C. is a big fighter, shes very fragile mentally and needs to win consistently to build up confidence. She was routed by Katarina Srebotnik in the first round in Sydney last week and thus heads into the Aussie Open winless. The world No. 6 might not make it into the second week.Agnes Szavay and Agnieszka Radwanska pose some threat to Kuznetsova, and Daniela Hantuchova might trouble her in the quarters, but the Sydney finalist is looking in solid shape to advance out of this section.Semifinalist: Svetlana KuznetsovaClosing stagesSerena Williams will be glad to see Sharapova has done all the hard work for her in taking out Henin. Against Sharapova, in Melbourne, youve got to like the defending champion to think back to what happened in 07 and pull through. In the other semi, Ill take Venus over Kuzy on a hard court any day of the week. Ill pick V over her sister as well.Champion: Venus Williams

Venus Williams

2008 Australian Open Contenders And Pretenders / I know I am late but I decided to make a list about the contenders and pretenders for the 2008 Australian Open. Since I live in the Eastern time zone in the greater Toronto area the Australian Open actually starts tonight. There is a sixteen hour time difference between Toronto and Melbourne Australia. Justine Henin the world number one on the WTA tour has not lost a match since Wimbledon last year. Justine Henin is the favorite to win the women’s event. Serena Williams and Maria Sharapova are the two players on Justine’s side of the draw that can beat her. Lindsay Davenport has an outside shot if she can beat Sharapova in the second round. However, Justine is  an amazing player she is on an incredible twenty eight match winning streak. Justine won the Sydney title even though Svetlana Kuznetsova choked a 3-0 lead in the final set. Justine has Maria Sharapova in her quarter. Sharapova for once has a tough draw. If Sharapova and Lindsay Davenport win their first round matches they could meet in a tough second round match. Davenport is 18-1 since coming back to the WTA tour in September 2007. Davenport has beaten world number three Jelena Jankovic to win the Bali event. Davenport also won Quebec City last November 2007 and the WTA Auckland event last week. However, Maria Sharapova is one of the elite. Sharapova may be marketable for the WTA but her results last year were not impressive. Sharapova was dismissed by Serena, Venus, and Ana Ivanovic in the first three slams of 2007 in lopsided scores. Sharapova’s game in my mind is just not developed enough. Maria needs more variety in her game she has the determination but what about adding more dimensions to her attacking style? Maria needs to play doubles more learn to volley, slice, drop shot, use the court. Davenport reminds me of Sharapova she’s a clean ball striker but the quicker players can beat her because she simply isn’t fast enough. Davenport hits a hard heavy ball but she doesn’t come to net much, she doesn’t volley, she doesn’t hit drop shots or lobs. Everyone knows Davenport can beat most of the players on the WTA. I wasn’t surprised when Davenport hammered the competition. The problem for Lindsay Davenport is she can’t seem to beat the best players in the grand slams events in the big matches. Davenport has the big serve and powerful ground-strokes but in the grand slams she doesn’t have the nerve. Can Davenport beat Sharapova if they do meet in the second round? The answer is yes but only if Sharapova is somehow off her game. If Sharapova is not serving well then Davenport has a chance. Sharapova is eleven years younger then Davenport and she moves better then her. The pressure is actually on Maria Sharapova here she has 700 points to defend and her pride. Sharapova has 4-1 edge against Davenport. The match could be close. I simply cannot predict the winner of this match. Although, I do believe both of them could lose to Justine Henin in the quarterfinals. Justine looks so strong right now. Serena and Venus Williams actually are on opposite sides of the draw. Serena is in the top half. Serena is lucky because she is not in Justine Henin’s quarter. Serena and Henin can meet in the semifinals. Serena could meet rising Serbian star Jelena Jankovic’s quarterfinals. Jankovic is ranked number three but I am not impressed with her. Jankovic needs to set up to the plate and prove she is worthy of the world number three ranking. Jankovic talks a lot about being a contender but she has not proven to me that she is one of the elite. Jankovic must win a slam to become one of the elite. Of course Jankovic has the talent the question is does she have the nerve? Jankovic has failed to reach a grand slam final and she has failed to beat the elite women in the grand slams. Serena was impressive last week when she won the mixed doubles event the Hopman Cup in Perth Australia with Mardy Fish last week. Serena is very fit and is confident. We can never count Serena out as she proved last year when she destroyed Sharapova to win the Australian Open. Serena is my second pick behind Justine Henin to win the women’s title. Serena is a great champion and I expect to see her in the late rounds of the event. Serena and Justine Henin are the best players on the WTA. I believe both Serena and Justine are the real contenders for the women’s title. Venus Williams is always a question mark? As usual the media underestimate Venus. Venus has been ignored once again. Venus is a quiet star I think this is why I love her so much. I love Venus but I am also realistic because girlfriend can be inconsistent. Everyone knows when Venus is on she is dangerous. Everyone knows when Venus is off she can be beaten. Venus last two trips to the Australian Open were disasters. In 2006 Venus lost in the first round. I honestly don’t know about Venus? Venus is lucky she is in the bottom half of the women’s draw which is the weaker half of the women’s draw. On paper Venus is the favorite to make the finals. However, it all depends on how Venus is playing. Venus could have problems with Ana Ivanovic, Svetlana Kuznetsova, and Anna Chakvetadze. Ivanovic, Kuznetsova, or Chakvetadze could reach the Australian Open women’s final as well. I love Venus but I am not holding my breath. The question is which Venus Williams will show up at the Australian Open? Will it be the great champion that blasted the field at Wimbledon or will be the sloppy Venus Williams that can lose early? We don’t know? I almost forgot to mention Amelie Mauresmo, my goodness what has happened to girlfriend? Amelie has fallen to number eighteen in the world. I will not count Amelie Mauresmo out because she has proven to be dangerous when we least expect it. Amelie had surgery last year on her appendix and I think she returned to the WTA too soon. Amelie has been in a slump but she can beat everybody when she is on including the Williams Sisters. Amelie has no pressure on her and this is a good thing she just can’t seem to handle pressure. Can Amelie win the Australian Open? I don’t know? I do know it would be foolish to ignore her. On the men’s side of the draw various media outlets have predicted doom and gloom for Roger Federer because they are sick of his dominance. The media are trying to hype Nalbandian . David Nalbandian has been a chronic underachiever in the men’s game he has problems with his weight and motivation. Is David Nalbandian ready to win a grand slam. The answer is I don’t know? Nalbandian was impressive defeating Federer and Nadal in Madrid and Paris. However, men’s tennis in the grand slams are best of five sets. The question is can Nalbandian or Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in a best of five set match? Rafael Nadal and Andy Roddick have the luck of the draw both men are the favorites to reach the final they are in the bottom half. Nadal was humiliated by Mikhail Youzhny in the finals of Chennai last week losing 6-0 6-1 the worst loss of his career. It appears the organizers have changed the surface to help Nadal and slowed the courts. Nadal once again has a dream draw to the semifinals. Can Nadal breakthrough and get past the quarterfinals at a hard-court grand slam? Only time will tell? Nadal has an easy path and he defeated Andy Roddick on hard courts last year in Indian Wells easily. Roddick may be hyped by ESPN television but his game has regressed he has gotten too bulky and muscular and he is just too slow. However, Roddick has the benefit of being on the weaker side of the draw he does have a chance to win because he is on the weaker side. WTA Contenders In No Particular Order: Justine Henin Serena Williams Maria Sharapova Venus Williams Lindsay Davenport Possible Pretenders If An Upset Occurs Jelena Jankovic Ana Ivanovic Amelie Mauresmo Svetlana Kuznetsova ATP Tour Contenders Roger Federer Rafael Nadal David Nalbandian Novak Djokovic Andy Roddick Possible Pretenders Fernando Gonzalez Andy Murray David Ferrer

Gnothi Seauton

Gnothi Seauton / Gnothi Seauton – Know Thyself. All this time… I always tried to find out more about me. I expanded my knowledge without knowing why I wanted to… or how important it is in discovering things about me. Often times… I would question myself, on the the times when I was stepped at… or just simply downgraded, why didn’t I fight back? why I held back? Even though I knew that I was right… why didn’t I fight for myself? for my pride? for my beliefs and for the grounds that I stand on? I finally know why. It’s because I know that if I fight back… I would know the right painful cruel words. If I fought back, I know for sure… I can really hurt someone. Not physically… but in the worse cruel way… which is verbally. I know that I can be evil… and when I’m evil… I’m just downright evil. But… my heart… had always been pure… and innocent… therefore stopping me from hurting someone… no matter how pissed I get. It’s a curse to be evil in mind but pure in heart. Cause the emotions get bottled up and there are times where you almost can’t breathe… And it’s all harder for me, a girl who always has to be happy… I hope someday… I can hear someone tell me what Sung-hee told Gyu-ri when Gyu-ri said she had to smile no matter what. “You don’t have to forcefully smile…”

Talk Sex with Sue Johanson / Story by Brittany DeAngelisSue Johanson entertained and informed SAIT students at the Orpheus Theatre on Thursday Nov. 29.Johanson told the crowd that it is important to have a dialogue about sex because there is a lot on wrong information circulating about the subject. She said accepting that people are sexual beings is a significant first step in talking about a subject many find uncomfortable.Johanson also focused on the fact that males are generally far more comfortable with their sexuality then females are because females were taught from an early age that it is wrong for them to think of themselves in a sexual way. She says that because adults generally react negatively to sexuality when dealing with their children, a childs first lesson in sexual education is often negative.Johanson says that because young boys do not listen as much as young girls, boys usually become experts on their bodies at an early age, while girls may be embarrassed by their bodies. The next formal lesson on sexual education young people receive is usually through their school. Johanson says that most of the sexual education young people receive through schools is lacking. She questions the fact that the diagrams used feature and name the parts of male genitals, but only show a females reproduction system, and for this reason, many females are unable to name parts of their genitals.Johansson says it is important for females to have terminology for their genitals because it helps them get to know their bodies.Disclaimer: The following list discuses sexuality in a way which may inform, offend, or amuse some people.Thing you may not know about sex, according to Sue87% of females reach orgasm by clitoral stimulation, not by penis in vagina thrusting. The clitoris has twice as many nerve endings as a penis. The top two thirds of the vagina have no nerve endings, but the bottom one third of the vagina is loaded with nerve endings. (So having a large penis is not as important as most guys are made to believe)What is the point of a 12 penis banging around in there when theres no-one home? asks Johanson. The clitoris doubles in size when a female is aroused.Anal sex is High risk behavior, according to Johanson. Heres why.The mucus membrane that lines the vagina is only one cell thick. The mucus membrane which lines the vagina is 23 cells thick, to put it in perspective. This means the anus membrane can tare very easily, and it is very easy to get an infection in the anus. It is also possible to transmit every sexually transmitted disease and infection through a tare in the anus.Females do not orgasm every time they have sex. When a male ejaculates, that does not necessarily mean he has an orgasm. Males may not orgasm every time they ejaculate. If a male or female does not reach orgasm during sex, that does not mean they didnt enjoy themselves, according to Johanson.Every female enjoys different things, and it is a females responsibility to know what feels good to her. A male should not be expected to somehow know what to do in order to please his partner. Open communication is important in the bedroom. There are approximately 500 million sperm stored in the testicles. There are approximately 100 000 sperm in every ejaculation. And finally, genital piercing can enhance pleasure. For example, piercing the male foreskin can be pleasurable for both males and females. However, I doubt that many males are going to try that out.For more information visit Sue Johansons web-sitehttp://www.talksexwithsue.com/PHOTOS COMING SOON!

American Cannibal

American Cannibal Voted Best Documentary of 2007 by Kurt Loder of MTV / 3Dwalkthroughs.com is excited to announce that American Cannibal was voted the best documentary of 2007 by Kurt Loder of MTV.As associate producers of the American Cannibal we are very pleased with this announcement. The movie has been released on DVD and is available for purchase at video stores nation wide. It will also start airing on Showtime in the middle of January and continue into the beginning of February. About AMERICAN CANNIBAL(2006) American Cannibal pushes beyond Fahrenheit/911 and Supersize Me to break new ground in documentary territory. Rather than forcing situations and twisting facts to tell a story, filmmakers Perry Grebin & Michael Nigro spent two and a half years twisting real life itself, and the result is the story. The filmmakers began American Cannibal in 2004 as a bold social experiment with reality. The set in motion real events that allowed them unlimited access to the results, pushing their cameras deep into the glitterdome of reality-TV production to emerge with an equally bold exposé.They watch as struggling writers earnestly pitch TV ideas, eventually selling out to the man behind the Paris Hilton sex tape. The sadistic, shameless reality show they churn out is documented from start to finish: from throwaway pitch to manic auditions through train-wreck production. Alongside the drama, the filmmakers interview prominent producers, psychologists, network execs, celebrities and D-lebrities, who offer candid insight and scathing judgements on our society.American Cannibal is a documentary as wild as the story behind it: a shocking, hilarious, bona fide portrait of our celebrity-driven culture and the appalling lengths well go to for entertainment.
